Why art? It has become trite to throw the word ‘passion’ around: perhaps it has been my adult mission to support the abundance of talented South African artists — and now to bring awareness of them and their work to the broader public, in my Dullstroom gallery. We would love to support the deepening of the arts and contribute to the cultivation, exposure and development of the creative art scene in South Africa.
The gallery is filled with work that I love. It doesn’t claim to represent every brilliant artist, but certainly the ones who speak to my senses and bring me joy.
Visitors to SILK Curated Collection will experience a gamut of emotions, from curiosity and excitement to intellectual exploration, informed – and uninformed, but equally valid – criticism, and delight. Some works could evoke alienation or a disconnect, and that’s perfect, too. It means that we are engaging with all our senses: tangibly and in real time, away from the artifice of technology and screens.
The art that brings me joy, peace and hope is too important not to share. My hope is that it will spark an element of creative curiosity for every viewer. A creative life is an amplified life: bigger, expansive and a hell of a lot more interesting.
