In her artist’s statement, Marike explains that she is compelled to make paintings that have weight and narrative in order to form a connection between the painting and the viewer. In doing this, she hopes to start a conversation between the viewer and herself.
From sentimental still lifes to more complex compositions, her work shows a fascination with fables, myths, superstitions and legends. These are used to imbue her seemingly everyday objects with a depth and whimsy which please the eye, offer layers of detail, layers of meaning and create a deeper narrative for the viewer.
Ultimately this shared 'story' and understanding, like a shared sentiment, creates a connection between the painting and the viewer and starts the conversations which Marike hoped they would.
