SCULPTOR

Victoria
newton-king

The child who used to sculpt with candle wax and the soft lead wrapping from vintage wine bottles, is now a sculptor of repute, casting bronzes of the life she observes around her. Her sculptures range from small maquettes up to her largest of 1,5m.

While living in Uganda, Victoria started informal pottery classes on the Makerere University grounds and later moved over to the sculpture department. Here she found a young lecturer who was willing to teach and guide her the art of making her sculptures from lead to wax to bronze. She learnt the old method of lost wax technique and still uses these methods today. Her style is quirky and playful and influenced from sculptors like Giacometti and Henry Moore and many modern-day artists.

Victoria has had a few joint exhibitions, her first in Uganda in 2009, then in Johannesburg in 2016 and later in 2018 in Somerset West.

In 2022 she won the Root44 Sculpture Competition with her sculpture called ‘Roots’, which will be a 6m, kinetic installation in their new restaurant.
