SCULPTOR
kobus
la grange
As a child growing up on a Free State farm, Kobus developed a sensitivity for wood sculpture from a young age and he is most strongly connected to it as a medium in his exploration of the human condition, through figurative sculptures.
He frequently uses waste wood in the production of the work, as he looks for innovative ways to construct and deconstruct the figure - ultimately creating a dialogue between the psychological and the material itself.
Although most strongly associated with his woodcarving, he has been both prolific and versatile as a creator, casting bronze, using welded steel, ceramics and fire sculpture as avenues for his creative output.
He has held numerous solo exhibitions locally as well as one in Belgium in 2018. His works are included in corporate collections locally as well as private collections both locally and abroad.
