VISUAL ARTIST

nadine
Hansen

Nadine Hansen works in both classical art and new media.

This Stilbaai-based artist is renowned for her contemplative self-portraits in oil paint on canvas, delicate graphite drawings on paper and even the occasional sculpture. Here she combines the human presence with the natural world through inclusions like specimens or plants, and embroidered concepts.

Her delicate pencil marks and brush strokes  infuse her creations with a subtle silence and tranquillity.

Most of her works are telling portraits of the artist herself, aimed at creating a meaningful exchange with the viewer, and momentary respite from life’s adversities.

Drawing from a deep well of empathy, reflective of her studies in psychology, Hansen treats her subjects with sensitivity as she captures the fragility and resilience of both human and natural forms.

“I like to explore the intricate balance and harmony that can be found in the interplay of the nuances of human existence and the environment. I am especially interested in the timeless relationship between all life”.

She is an active member of the South African art scene and participates in regular group shows around the country. In 2018 Hansen was a finalist in the inaugural SOTA Award, an achievement she holds in high regard. The artist has exhibited her work in numerous galleries, including a solo at the Rust en Vrede gallery,  and her work forms part of numerous private collections.
